Publishing company seeks an experienced freelance fiction reader/writer for outline work

The ideal candidate will be familiar with – if not steeped in – books in the thriller/post-apoc/disaster genre. Your task will be to take 1-3+ page overviews of series, turn them into 1-3 page overviews of each individual book, and then use those overviews to create chapter-by-chapter outlines that will be used by writers to then write the books.

The series overviews are created by one of our executive team, and will include main character and general details. From here, your job will be to transform these overviews into overviews of each book, and then once those overviews have been edited/approved, take them and create outlines that have chapter-by-chapter overviews of the story in each book, adding details, side characters, plots, etc as may be needed. In other words: you will take a relatively detailed book overview and transform that into individual book overviews, then take that and expand each of those into detailed outlines.

Each book is part of a 3-6 book series, and each book will require 20-40+ chapters, depending on the target length of the book/series. Each chapter outline should be roughly 300-500 words in length, for a total of anywhere between 6,000 to 20,000+ words per outline. Assuming high-quality work (following direction, genre tropes, the same sort of setups as other books we publish, etc – because these are outlines, polished content is NOT as important as information-rich content) is performed, no rewrites will be required/requested (this is our ideal and should be yours as well). Pay rate will start at $30/hour.

This position requires DEEP knowledge of thriller/post-apoc/disaster books, and the tropes that are associated with them.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be well-read in these genres and be a quick study on why our brand of books are different from others in the same space either through reading through our materials/guidelines, our books, or both.
  • Be a CONSTANT communicator via email, Slack or otherwise
  • Be an exceptionally fast learner and picker-upper of new tasks and processes
  • Be on top of deadlines and understand that meeting or exceeding them is VITAL

We are looking to find someone immediately for a test run and if it ends up being a good fit, you’ll be turned loose onto a pile of series/books we have planned for 2026/2027/2028.
